Here is a list of things we can do to avoid falls:
1. Keep your home clutter free. Do not leave things such as newspapers, magazines, or your teacup that has to go to the kitchen on the stairs or on the floor.
2. Repair, remove, or replace loose carpet, slippery accent rugs, or protruding wood floorboards.
3. Install handrails and grab bars.
4. Make sure you have adequate lighting throughout your living space.
5. Wear clothing that fits properly so sleeves, cuffs, and hems don't get caught on furniture or railings.
6. Wear shoes when not in bed sleeping as socks can be very slippery and dangerous.
7. Use appropriate non-slip mats everywhere including in the bath.
8. Be really careful when you negotiate stairs and limit the trips you take up and down the stairs.
9. Take your time while you move more carefully. When you are through taking a nap sit up, pause, sit on the edge of the bed, pause, and then stand. When you are outside be aware of the terrain and don't hurry. Take everything slow and steady and you will have many more days of happy activity.
Remember my friends, preventing falls means injury prevention. Injuries are something all folks can do without!
