I have a rant and I would appreciate it if you would read it; particularly you Canadians!
About 2 or 3 weeks ago a very large family came to our little neighbourhood park and had a birthday celebration. The park isn't made for picnics. Well I would not have had any argument with them at all. except the next morning garbage was strewn over every other square inch of our beautiful park. A family that lives across from it went to work and were picking the litter up when I got back with my trash bag. They wouldn't allow me to do anything but I did contribute the bag.
Yesterday I went to the park and found litter all along the pathway. I picked it up and put it in the park trash can. I should not have had to do this. The original owner of the item that was wrapped in the litter should have taken it to the trash and if it was a child then their mother should have done it. My dog and I take a walk or two, depending on the weather, everyday in this park. We are five houses along the street from the park.
On the short stroll home I saw three teenage boys walking home with Caesar Pizza boxes in hand. They were finishing up their pizzas. I saw the one lad who had finished his throw the box on the street. I told him in a reasonable voice that he should pick it up and not litter our beautiful country. He looked at me and the one boy of the three that did not have a box picked it up. Well I watched them go up the street and that boy pitched it on the road. I said in a loud voice, "You dropped something" He looked back and the owner of the box picked it up and I said "Good for you" Hopefully both boxes made it to the recycle when they got home.
Well the point I am trying to make is this. If you don't teach people to be on their toes environmentally, this old world doesn't have a chance of survival. Canada at one point in my youth was known as a very clean country and people living here were proud of it. This pride, along with a lot of other ideals has gone by the proverbial wayside in our nation. Wake up Canada and make this a year, our 150 birthday year, the time to do those things we said we would do back in the 60's for our environment. Pick up the damn trash that is all over our 'living room"! Make litter control part of your day to day routine.

I love walking in the park with my friend Ruth. I enjoy sniffing the grass. I appreciate our park so much. Many people in the neighbourhood want to have the park remain pristine than seem to think it is okay to throw garbage everywhere. When we go to the park Ruth takes a container of bags that she uses one at a time to pick up my waste. We take it home and put it in a special green bin. It is really nice to know that I can have a part in helping people grow gardens. The summer is drawing to a close so I truly hope we have an 'Indian Summer' before winter comes. Enjoy the rest of August everyone!
