I am constantly learning new things on Bing, Youtube, and Google. Another source of information is PBS and tvo, two learning channels on television. I was able to watch a documentary on tvo about George Boole this past week. This gentleman was born November 2, 1815, in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. When he was a young man he became a professor at Queen's College in Cork, Ireland. He was a mathematician who helped establish modern symbolic logic. His algebra of logic, now called Boolean algebra, is basic to the design of digital computer circuits. This gentleman should be part of every child's history lessons on the planet. Why? The man was self taught, a genius and is hero material. He died of pneumonia on December 8, 1864 at the young age of 49 in Cork. In 1939, yet another mathematician worked for MI6. The newly created British intelligence agency recruited Cambridge mathematics alumnus Alan Turing to crack Nazi codes, including Enigma, which crypt-analysts had thought unbreakable. Turing's team, analyze Enigma messages while he builds a machine to decipher them. Turing and his team finally succeed and become heroes, but in 1952, the quiet genius encounters disgrace when authorities reveal he is gay and send him to prison. There was both a biography called Allan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges and a movie called 'Imitation Game' starring Benedict Cumberbatch based on the gentleman's time with his team. There are lots of other things that I am curious about today. Not the least of which is how my book learning; that is what I learned about the Society from my University courses I took many years ago. People are still learning things about those that are different from themselves; as well as those that are in their circle of friends. Social Scientists often use two disciplines in tandem. When we are around those who are different from us by status, ethnicity, religion, sexual practices, or politics, we are often uncomfortable. But if we are with our social and ideological peers we are at ease with ourselves. Well that applies at least until we find that Harry or Mary don't quite agree with our ideas as much as we thought they did. The thing about anyone's opinion is that it is in constant flux at least from 0 to 50. Older humans can have a change of mind or opinion at times. Just not as often as their juniors. I have met quite a few people over 65 that aren't really interested in the people and things around them anymore. Not even the tiniest curious about the world. William James was an American philosopher, psychologist, and a well trained physician. Philosophically, he was a definitely a pragmatist. He lived from January 11, 1843 to August 26, 1910. He was 68 when he died but he left many essays for us about his beliefs. The purpose of bringing up James is simply that I am an idealist and I am always interested in how others think. James was a realist and a pragmatist which is quite opposite to my way of seeing the world. According to an article I found online, in Wikipedia, idealism is explained in the following excerpt. "In philosophy, idealism is the group of philosophies which assert that reality, or reality as we can know it, is fundamentally mental, mentally constructed, or otherwise immaterial. Epistemologically, idealism manifests as a skepticism about the possibility of knowing any mind-independent thing. In contrast to materialism, idealism concedes the primary of consciousness, which means consciousness exists before material, consciousness creates and determines material, not vice versa. Idealism theories believe consciousness is the origin of the world and aim to explain the existing world by mental causes. Idealism theories are mainly divided into two groups. Subjective idealism concedes the primary of human consciousness and believes that the existing world are a combination of sensation. Objective idealism concedes the primary of an objective consciousness which exists before and independent of human ones. In a sociological sense, idealism emphasizes how human ideas—especially beliefs and values—shape society.[1] As an ontological doctrine, idealism goes further, asserting that all entities are composed of mind or spirit.[2] Idealism thus rejects physicalist and dualist theories that fail to ascribe priority to the mind." Although, given the constructs of the above definition, I am not totally in agreement with that particular explanation either. I must be one of the few older people that can still battle with my thoughts even if I am quite idealistic. So you see we are probably all to one degree or another like the song says; "I'm a little bit country and a little bit rock 'n roll." I know that to be true or this idealist would not have the china, music, and teddy bear collections I do. Just a little bit materialism, a spot of logic and the rest is idealism. Today, I have only one more thing on my mind. Does anyone read my blog? Do you have a difference of opinion or something you want to say about what I wrote or a similar experience or feeling? Then please, humour me and post your comments. That is all I have this time folks. Have a great month and Happy Halloween. Angel's Words of Heavenly Wisdom I hope that you have been enjoying my part of the blog. My Mum and I have been wondering if it would be a good idea to change it into a vlog. That is still under consideration. I think it would be a good idea to make it a blog with videos. I really like the idea of articles and not just pictures or videos. Mum is, as you see, of two minds about the whole idea. Hopefully we will have it sorted out right after Christmas...maybe sooner. I feel sorry for the children in our park. The older ones are fooling around on the swings and slides that are for younger kids under five. The kids over twelve and the grownups are abusing the swings and slides put up for the older children between five and twelve. One of these days I won't be to surprised if some things are broken. A lot of mothers ask Mum if their children can pet me and most of the time that is fun. There are some mothers with children that look at me worriedly and hedge past me and my friend. I wonder if a lot of people in Asian countries do not have pets. There are some countries in the world where they eat cats and little doggies like me. That makes me sad and rather nauseous. The idea of anyone eating dog or cat meat really bothers us. It seems funny, that we often have chicken, turkey, pig, and sometimes cow but we don't get nauseous at the idea of eating that at all. Oh well maybe Mum can write something on eating customs sometime. That is all from me this week. Ruth says she is going to dress me up on the 31st. She told me about All Hallows Eve but I still don't understand it. As long as I get some peanut butter doggie candy I guess I can go along with her. Bye-bye everyone. |
