I think that you will find that all the prices in any store have increased since 2013 in Ontario; indeed in Canada. Unfortunately the average working stiff's income has not increased percentage by percentage in buying power. The thing that makes it even harder on the average citizen let alone people on pension or disability is that taxes and prices on homes are way out of reach for the average couple these days. The rent on the average two bedroom apartment here in Richmond Hill runs from $1340 to $1600 plus. Meanwhile, in downtown Toronto the less expensive apartments run $2450 per month. The land developers are making money out here in the suburbs hand over fist for apartments standing on what used to be prime farmland. Now there is another reason food costs are up so high in 2017. Our local farmland has all but disappeared.
I might not have a Bachelor's degree in economics but I can read just fine thank you very much! To me this is and has been the hardest decade to live in since I was out on my own, by my choice, in my teens. Believe me I have been a single mother or married in name only. In both cases I dealt with the bills. I know how frustrating it is juggling the food, rent and other bills.
These days, during my golden years, it is a balancing act all over again. I can not travel the way I wanted to but little excursions are nice in the Summer. I am glad to visit a glallery, zoo, or museum. I also enjoy going out for coffee or to the hairdresser for a haircut, with a friend.
I have never asked my children to lend me money so I could purchase a car or be in a better financial spot. I have never once asked anyone for anything I wouldn't be glad to do for them if or when I had it. What amazes me is that when I see someone 'sinking' I would try my best to get them the assistance they need if I couldn't help them. It has only been in the past 8 years that people have helped me. I am not necessarily talking about financial assistance; but with little acts of kindness.
So what can we do as citizens to help ourselves, our families and other people who need help? Be aware of the different agencies here in Ontario. Network yourselves so you can be effective neighbours in your area, know how to get to the local food bank, know people that would be glad to provide the first ride to some of these agencies or have maps of the bus routes so you can pass them along. Take care of yourself, others, and take enjoyment out of these little acts of kindness you do because it can make your life richer.
Angels Words of Heavenly Wisdom
All I can say is that life is good at our home. I get petted by everyone here and anyone that comes by to visit. I get a couple of walks a day and lots of play time with Ruth. The only thing I don't like is the fact that I can't go to the chiropractor with her. I sure would like a massage myself.
We saw the second or third to last episode of the first season last night of Midnight, Texas. It was great. It made us jump a couple of times. Anyway, I was surprised Ruth let me watch it as I am only 4 years old but they tell me I am 28 in dog years so I guess its okay.
Have a great week and see you next time.
