In Flanders Fields" is a war poem in the form of a rondeau, written during theFirst World War by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. He was inspired to write it on May 3, 1915, after presiding over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. According to legend, fellow soldiers retrieved the poem after McCrae, initially dissatisfied with his work, discarded it. "In Flanders Fields" was first published on December 8 of that year in the London-based magazine Punch. Remember our Canadian soldiers today for all the sacrifices they made. Since Canada confederated as a nation in 1867, they fought in the Boer War of South Africa, WW1, WW2, The Korean War, (some Canadians volunteered to fight in Vietnam but Canada itself never joined that war), The Persian Gulf War when George Bush Sr. was US president and the present war in Afghanistan. We are still fighting in this one. Apart from that, Canada has sent military "peace keepers" under a mandate from the United Nations in several places most notably Cyprus. So remember all the brave men and women who have fought in all these conflicts. It is especially important that new Canadians know that our country is based on Christian principles and it is those principles on which our society is built here in Canada. We must know in our hearts that they fought for God, Sovereign, and Country for our right to live in a free country where we can worship any faith in which we choose to believe. The Canadian Bill of Rights states all the freedoms we have in addition to our freedom of religion.
